The Old Fashioned cocktail is the perfect blend of sour and sweet, proving that opposites really do attract! Despite being an Old Fashioned cocktail it’s actually frequently seen in popular modern culture, most famously in Mad Men, where it is enjoyed frequently by the leading character. Because of this, we’re expecting you to drink it in a suit with slicked-back hair. Perhaps in the casino or even just playing a poker game online at home. It can take an acquired taste to enjoy this cocktail so why not have a go at whipping one up yourself and seeing if you love or loathe it? Here’s how to.
For one Old Fashioned cocktail you will need:
– 50 ml of either Bourbon or Scotch (personal preference)
– Three drops of a whisky bitter
– 1 teaspoon of sugar syrup (simple to make, boil hot water and sugar together and let cool)
– 1 thick piece of orange rind
– 1 twist of lemon rind
– 1 maraschino cherry
– A small handful of ice
The glass you will need for this is an Old Fashioned glass- a small, stout tumbler. Rub the orange rind around the edge of the glass before placing in the base of the glass. Place three ice cubes in the bottom, then fill the glass up with the sugar syrup, three drops of whisky bitter and the maraschino cherry.
Next, add half of the Scotch or the Bourbon, depending on what you have chosen, and stir the contents of the glass gently for around ten seconds. Following this, add three more ice cubes to the drink and then pour in the remaining Scotch/Bourbon, stirring this in again for a further ten seconds.
Garnish the tumbler with the lemon rind and serve straight away!
